Medical Procedure

R.N. COMMENTS

To whom it may concern,

In August 1996, I assisted in an endoscopy procedure with Nancy Kafka, Frayda Kafka's sister. Nancy was hospitalized for a bleeding ulcer. Nancy was quite agitated at the beginning of the process, she was frightened in anticipation of the discomfort of the insertion of a tube in her throat. Frayda was granted permission to use hypnosis to help relax her.

Frayda was quiet at first, ascertaining what was needed. She had no previous experience with this procedure.

The Doctor began to insert the tube and Nancy fought violently. When Frayda heard me tell Nancy not to think about the scope, she intervened and explained that the use of the word scope kept the scope in her consciousness. It was such a simple thing, but when Frayda started talking about the roses in Nancy's garden, she calmed down.

Frayda later told us that she was speaking to Nancy in rhythm with her breath, as she simultaneously applied a gentle pressure to her arm in the same rhythm.

After Frayda had established a rapport with Nancy, everything went smoothly. I expressed interest in learning these techniques and asked Frayda if she would be willing to teach an in-service course for the nurses.

Sincerely,

Dolores Brink R.N..
